MADDEE WWY

Making her second appearance on TMR is the Toronto newcomer Maddee with brand new track ‘Wwy’, an acronym for ‘Where Were You’. Once again, the 21-year-old talent showcases her husky vocals against a backdrop of contemporary jazz structures and lofi pop songwriting, which was created alongside close collaborator Louie Short. There’s a tender vulnerability to Maddee’s voice here, and it’s something the artist sheds further light on. As she says, “‘WWY’ was written about a really bad night I had where I was seeking comfort and support from the person who I thought was supposed to be there for me and quickly found out that they weren't. I thought I needed their support and in the end I had to learn how to provide that for myself.” It’s a bold, complex, slanting, bouncing and intoxicating track; one that relays the intricate nature of a negative relationship that has given ample inspiration to Maddee for her upcoming Red Mind EP. Look out for the six-track debut release on October 17th. - Hannah Thacker
